BUCS + Cup Recap (Week 6+7)
Men’s Blues: The Blues crashed to a first-round exist in this year’s BUCS Cup in horribly bizarre and disappointing circumstances. 90 minutes in to the visit of a technically-sound and in-form East London side, who sit at the top of their respective Division 1, the Blues were 1-0 up, with the goal coming from a Dom Thelen penalty. Yet, having looked completely comfortable in their defensive work for the duration, the Blues were caught by a quickly taken long throw, allowing East London to equalise with the last kick of normal time. The Blues did not have much time to recover from this body blow, as East London took the lead directly from the extra-time restart. It is hard to imagine, in this Club’s near-150 year history, it has seen a game in which the Blues have sacrificed a lead and then fallen behind with two consecutive touches of the football. From this freak moment and despite their best efforts, the Blues could not find a way back into a game that, with two strikes against the woodwork and a number of other good chances, they should have really put to bed in normal time.
Women’s Blues (Last week): This week the Blues continued their league campaign away at Northampton. The Blues started well in difficult conditions, and were 3-1 up at half time. However Northampton mounted a 2nd half comeback, and with 20 minutes to go the Blues lead had been reduced to 4-3. Some solid defending ensured that Northampton didn’t level the game and the Blues once again came away with 3 points.
