Match Report: Balliol 2-0 St Catz

Catz 1st started their title defence in difficult circumstances, missing several experienced campaigners (most notably golden boot winning striker Chris Harrison). Following last seasons heroics from the team, we wanted a strong start, but were left in total disarray when the skipper George Todd took the warmup and then ran off.

A blatantly hungover Tom Tutton took over captaincy duties and led the side out. 1st half Catz battled hard against a strong Baliol side, but were rusty to say the least. Late in the first half, Baliol broke the deadlock with a lucky shinned volley from the edge of the area. Sunil Mahey did his best to get booked when he scythed down Baliol’s 200million pound summer signing, but the ref opted for firm words “that’s out of order”. A couple of Tutton runs from midfield threatened the Baliol defence, but inevitably his long legs got the better of him.

Second half Catz were tired, the freedom of summer and freshers week started to show (Tom Williamson), and Baliol started to get on top. A couple of good saves by Josh Tray maintained the gap at one goal, but on 70 minutes a Baliol midfielder broke free and scuffed his shot which luckily chipped our perfectly positioned keeper.

On a brighter note, 5 freshers played today which is extremely encouraging and really added to the side. Most notably MOTM Oli, who showed class and composure on the ball and worked tirelessly in defence.

Thanks to everyone who came down, but the firm was lacking in numbers for a game so close to our beloved College.

Will definitely be looking to bounce back next Monday with the first home game of the season against Johns, hope to see lots of you there.
