Futsal Cuppers - The Group Stages So Far

Pat Barton: loves goals.

We are halfway through the inaugural Futsal Cuppers tournament, and the group stage has thrown up some classic ties already.

The competition has seen 346 goals scored so far (an average of 3.46 per game), but none have been finer than Kai Laddiman's for St John's 2 against Lincoln 2. His spectacular, over-the-shoulder volley into the top corner bore shades of Tim Cahill against the Netherlands in 2014, and has been just one of the many highlights of the competition so far.

Pembroke 1 and Pembroke/Queen's MCR hold the joint record for biggest wins so far, with their 8-1 drubbings of St Hugh's 2 and Corpus 1 respectively also sharing the record for the highest-scoring games.

The tournament has also thrown up some very contrasting styles of play, from the free-flowing, total futsal of a St John's 1 side laden with OUAFC players, to some really battling defensive performances. The best example of the latter so far has been St Benets', Henri du Pèrier-inspired, 1-0 win with four men against St Catz 3 - a real smash and grab.

For all the failed attempts so far, however, no one has yet to score directly from kick off, so that accolade awaits whoever can do it in the two weeks that remain of the men's competition.

The knockout stages will begin on Tuesday of 4th week, with the quarter-finals, semis and final will take place on Friday of 4th. For the full schedule and up-to-date standings, follow this link.
