Match Report: OUWAFC Furies

16/01/19 De Montford University 2nds 0 - 1 Furies

With no BUCS fixture scheduled, the Furies began Hilary term with a friendly against a De Montford University (DMU) 2nd team that contained a generous proportion of 1st team players. Meanwhile, the Furies travelled to Leicester (which is only 90 minutes away from Oxford - who knew) with no subs and a back four made up of a wing back playing as a CB, a midfielder and two wingers. As well as providing an opportunity for many of the squad to demonstrate their versatility, the friendly also gave Kathy Novikov her debut Furies appearance and a return for Maria del Rio after almost a year out injured.

Despite a long Christmas break and an untraditional formation, the Furies were quick out of the blocks, and it wasn’t long before they took the lead. Jasmine Savage went on one of her mazy runs down the right wing and delivered a cross that eventually found its way through to Novokiv, who kept her cool to grab her first Furies goal. As the half progressed, the Furies carved out some great chances with Eleanor Frew and Rebecca North going close on a number of occasions. However, the Furies went into the break just the one goal to show for their efforts.

The second half saw DMU emerge from the tunnel a changed side (literally), and they quickly asserted their dominance. The Furies spent most of the 45 minutes on the back foot, which wasn’t helped by playing 10 minutes with only 9 players, and it was only some brave goalkeeping from Emmie Halfpenny, as well as some last ditch tackles by Lowri Fernyhough, that kept the Furies’ lead intact.

The Furies ultimately demonstrated their fighting spirit and perseverance to hold their lead until the final whistle and will look to continue their winning ways into the rest of the season, as the build up to Varsity begins.
